Introduction of MOOCs

MOOC contains four letters:

Massive – Each course will attract a large number of participants, often in the thousands.

Open – Each course is available for everyone to take, reflect on and comment upon. Moreover, it is free of charge and course content and related assignments will be shared among people who take the course.

Online – The course takes place online, course information is uploaded in the cloud. Faculty members and students can interact with each other through the Internet.

Course – Each course has facilitators and course materials. It also has a starting and an ending day. Moreover, it has many course participants. Each course focuses on a topic that people care about.

  • The University’s major considerations:
    1. Platform, brand, and marketing.
    2. Bestowing certificates of completion and providing credit hours.
    3. Charging a fee by working with Twitter or offering free of charge, and looking for sources of funding.
  • Curriculum planning:

Going through 5W and 1H on the following:

  1. Course design, course recording, and post-production.
  2. Professional courses, general education courses, and other fundamental courses.
  3. Course quality and quantity.
  4. Mandarin, English, and other languages.

  • Providing teaching resources to faculty members:
    1. Make landmark courses available.
    2. Provide advice regarding teaching online, enhance students’ learning, and assign a teaching assistant.
  • Enhancing students’ learning:
    1. Open courses to our students as well as the students of other educational institutions.
    2. Keep our current students and attract more international students.
    3. Offer more online learning opportunities and enable learning without borders
  • Setting up University policies:
    1. Provide grants and awards to faculty members.
    2. Work with other educational institutions.
    3. Offer courses through the University’s regular programs, continuing education programs, or lifelong learning programs.
    4. Gain accreditation for online courses, and earn acceptance from other educational institutions on our online courses.
  • Offering courses with local uniqueness:
    1. Provide courses containing local culture and languages, the University’s special features, and other local uniquenesses.

*The instructor will prepare a lesson plan for each class.
*The class is longer.
*Making a video for the entire course.
*The instructor may only provide a handout for the class.
Interaction with others*The class focuses on interaction.
*Each class employs numerous online functions, such as discussions online, taking tests online, submitting reports online, working with peers online, etc.
*Each class is conducted mainly in the classroom.
Courses that have been taken*The courses taken are recorded in the platform.
*Students will be provided proof of completing a course.
*The system will offer a proof of passing an exam.
 
Educational principle*Students take initiative in their own learning.*Faculty members can share teaching repeat courses with each other.

Online courses provided by the University:

  • Each online course is required to be reviewed once every three years by the Ministry of Education.
  • Faculty members who apply for teaching an online course must attend at least three online teaching seminars.
